Battling a field of over 40 golfers, Richard Haniff, Rabindranauth Persaud and Dr. Philbert London walked away with the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ Flights respectively when the curtain came down on the inaugural Wine Cellar/Massy Golf tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club yesterday.

While spectators were treated to wine tasting in the pavilion, the golfers took to the green where Haniff produced a 75/66 score to defeat Club President, Aleem Hussain in the ‘A’ Flight for golfers with a handicap of 0-9 while the 11-19 Flight saw Persaud chalking up 85/67, ahead of last week’s winner of the flight, Azrodeen Shaw with 83/67.

The ‘C’ Flight saw London winning with 87/63 with  Danny `Maxim’ Mangra settling for second with 90/66.

Consolation prizes were awarded to acting Club Captain, Dr. Joaan Deo for the Nearest to the Pin and AIan Gouveia for the Longest Drive.

Speaking at the end of the competition, Hussain said the greens were in immaculate conditions while the weather had shown promise for the golfers to have a good run, adding that the competition was at its peak and the turn out nearly doubled that of last week’s.

Hussain thanked the sponsors for coming on board with the club, identifying it as “another feather in the hat” of competitions the club has hosted as they look to break the record for most tournaments in a year.

Meanwhile, CEO of Wine Cellar, Marcia Nadir-Sharma, expressed her satisfaction with the tournament and pledged the company’s continued support towards sports while looking to expand the tournament if it comes around next year.
