Venezuelans remanded over theft, receipt of stolen articles

Two Venezuelans were yesterday remanded to prison, after they were jointly charged with breaking and entering a shop in Kumaka, Region One, where they allegedly stole articles valued more than $200,000.

Another Venezuelan, who was charged with knowingly accepting the stolen articles, was also remanded.

They appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court one.

Oscar Joramilo, 22, and Alexis Zapata, 22, denied a charge alleging that between June 21 and 22, they broke and entered the shop of Alicia Wong and stole $273,300 worth of articles.

Joramilo, who claimed to be a mechanic, told the court via translator that due to the situation in his country, he came over to Guyana in search of employment and has been here for six months. Zapata related that he has also been in the country for six months.

Another Venezuelan, Nilko Garcia, 26, was separately charged for another offence related to the break and entry and larceny charge.

Garcia denied an allegation which stated that between June 21 and 22, at Kumaka Waterfront, North West District, he received from Joramilo $273,300 worth of articles, knowing same to be stolen or unlawfully obtained from Alicia Wong.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail, stating that considering that the defendants are not from Guyana, they might be a flight risk. He also said that some of the articles that were stolen were recovered and lodged at the Mabaruma Police Station.

The Chief Magistrate subsequently remanded the three men to prison and told them to make their next court appearance on July 8.
