Teen dies after struck by car at Tuschen

A 17-year-old boy died after being struck by a car while crossing the Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo public road yesterday and the driver of the vehicle, a police constable, is in custody.

The deceased teen has been identified as Azeez Mohamed of Lot 63 Ocean Gardens, Meten-meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.

Police said at about 12:50 am yesterday, a car bearing registration number PNN 7853, struck Mohamed as he was in the process of crossing the road.

The vehicle was being driven by a police constable who is stationed on the West Demerara.

Investigations revealed that the car was travelling west along the southern carriageway when Mohamed ran across the road from the northern carriageway. The rank alleged that Mohamed ran into his path and as a result, was struck down.

The victim was picked up and rushed to the Leonora Diagnostic Centre in an unconscious state where he died while receiving treatment, the police said.

The body was taken to the Ezekiel’s Funeral Home and was later identified by Mohamed’s father Shafeek Mohamed.

Police said the driver was administered a breathalyzer test but no trace of alcohol was detected.

An autopsy is to be conducted.
