Street football playoffs set for Burnham Court

The Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship Playoff Round will commence tonight from 18:00hrs at the Burnham Court on Middle and Carmichael Streets.

According to a release from the tournament coordinator, Three Peat Promotions, a minimum of 15 matches are slated to be staged at the venue, with the respective winners progressing to the main round.

The correspondence further added, “We are expecting a very competitive Playoff Round as many teams battle for a place in the main draw. We have received several new entrants during the registration period, which highlights the expansion of the tournament.”

The release disclosed, “The anticipation and expectation for the competition is there within the respective communities. Several of the teams have already commenced their preparation and have expressed confidence in making the main event. We are asking all the teams to be at the venue on time so that we can have a smooth flow of games.”

The main round of the competition will commence on July 12th, with July 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th and August 3rd the other playing dates.

Three venues are slated to be utilised. They include the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Burnham Court and newcomer the National Racquet Centre.

The first two nights of the main tournament will feature an elimination format. The respective winners will progress to the group stage.

The group round will be played over the following three nights, with the top two finishers from each section advancing to the quarterfinal and subsequent semi-final round.

This will be hosted on the penultimate date. The eight teams which fail to advance from the group round will comprise the Guinness Plate Championship.

The overall winner will automatically seal their place in the National Championship in August.

To date Beacons [Bartica Champion], Melanie-B [East Coast Demerara winner], Brothers United [West Demerara/East Bank Demerara winner], Trafalgar [Berbice champion] and High Rollers [Linden champion] are the teams to have secured automatic berths to the national championship.
