A quarrel over five hundred dollars has resulted in the death of a 21- year-old man at Kaneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The stabbing occurred at 11 am on Saturday.

The dead man has been identified as Mervin Squires, a labourer of Lot 52 1st Field Kaneville, EBD.

Police yesterday said the suspect, a 17- year-old  who is also a labourer of New Providence, EBD is in custody assisting with the investigations.

From investigations, police said the suspect and deceased were engaged in a gambling game with cards. During the course of the game an issue arose over five hundred dollars and this prompted an argument. As a result, Squires, the police said, allegedly pulled off the suspect’s chain. Annoyed by the action, the suspect armed himself with a knife and inflicted two wounds to the left side of Squires’ chest. The injured Squires was picked up and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His mother, Moliaka Fernandes last night told Stabroek News that she was at church when she received a message that her son had been stabbed.

She said that she was informed that her son was involved in a disagreement with another individual over a $500. The woman added that when she arrived at the hospital he had already succumbed to the injuries.
