Manchester United holds special place in hearts of West Indians

Dear Editor,

The Stabroek News edition of Thursday June 27 carried an article accompanied by a photograph, of the West Indies Cricket Team and management staff currently in England, touring the home of one of the most famous football teams, Manchester United, in Manchester at Old Trafford.

I can only imagine how elated and privileged the team felt. As it happens, a lot of West Indian footballers ply their trade in England playing for the various clubs in the elite Premier League as well as other clubs in the Football Association (FA). So for many West Indians, Manchester United holds a special place in our hearts.

It was at that club that Trinidadian Dwight Yorke (a household name in the Caribbean), the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, van Nistelrooy, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo (the greatest of them all) and also Wayne Rooney the record goal scorer for England and arguably the best football coach of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson, all made their mark.

Manchester United is the richest club in the world, one of the most talked about clubs and the club with the most

silverware (42 titles) in the Premier League.

For the West Indies team management staff and coaches, I’m sure it would be difficult for them to put into words the feelings that overcome them while at that ground in that dressing room where great footballers from the world over once graced.

Yours faithfully,

Archie W. Cordis
