Two brothers were yesterday remanded to prison after they were accused of being in possession of 5.2 pounds of cannabis.

Kevon Thomas and Kevin Thomas, said to be both 23, appeared before Chief Magis-trate Ann McLennan, who read the charge to them in a city court.

It is alleged that the brothers, on July 9, at Hururu Mission, Upper Berbice, had 2.38 kilogrammes (equivalent to 5.2 pounds) of cannabis in their possession for trafficking.

A not guilty plea was entered by both men after the reading of the charge.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, at about 1.30 am, ranks from Kwakwani, being in receipt of information, went to the Berbice River in the vicinity of Hururu Mission and observed a wooden boat. The boat was stopped and the four occupants were searched, which led to the discovery of a black haversack in the stem of the boat. A search of the haversack uncovered the cannabis in a bulky bag.

Mansfield said the brothers were told of the crime and later taken to the Kwakwani Police Station, where they later gave police caution statements admitting to the crime.

Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the accused and both were later remanded to prison. They are set to make their next court appearance on August 2nd before the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
