Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) bronze medal pair Ashley Khalil and Taylor Fernandes were on Friday denied a podium finish after being edged out of the squash semi-finals in the ongoing 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

The pair recorded a spirited performance against Chileans Maria Pinto and Paulina Delgado but eventually lost 1-2.

The Chileans took the first set 11-4 before Khalil and Fernandes banded together to level the match 1-1 with an 11-8 second set triumph.

The South Americans continued to go at each other in the decider but it was the Guyanese who were on the receiving end, dropping the final set and the match 5-9.

Team Guyana will now turn their attention to the teams’ category of the games which begins today.

President of the Guyana Squash Association David Fernandes, who is part of the contingent in Peru, told Stabroek Sport that the girls are not thwarted by their showing thus far.

“They are in good spirits,” Fernandes underscored, while adding that the Guyanese will leave it all on the court when the teams’ category begins.

“The team deserves to be here and they have all done well so far. The teams in this tournament will be tough but they will give their best,” he added.
