Last chance for political win-win situation

Dear Editor,

Let’s call an ax an ax.

Both General Elections (GE) statistics since 1992 and the unilateralism of Jagdeo do not suppport a PPP victory. I can safely bet 10 to 1 they will lose. I believe Jagdeo is the cause of the PPP disintegrating and losing the past elections. What makes him think he will win this time?

But, most importantly, it is not about a PPP or PNC victory. If either party wins, the country loses, and this time the loss and damage will be irreparable.

But Fate, Karma and the gods have given us another chance, the last chance, and the only way we can achieve a win-win situation is by implementing the following two basic changes:

(1) Constitutional Changes before the GE. If the people wait for these changes to “happen” after the GE, they are fools. Only fools do the same thing over and over and hope for different results. The main changes should address unlimited powers of the President, and, “winner takes all” articles. Inter-racial governance should be built into the Constitution.

(2) Not just shared governance but Shared Goals and Shared Destiny – established on a Pre-1955 PPP Model (the year the PPP was split into two PPPs, with Jagan and Burnham going separate ways). This was the road not taken (as per Brigadier General Joe Singh in Saturday’s SN), and the road we should back up and take before the GE and before the oil revenues flow. Dr. David Hinds also advocates the same, although he sees the glass half empty.

Those of us who are gifted with the power of the pen and pastoral qualities should educate our people. History will never absolve those who remain quiet today.

Yours faithfully,

Gokarran Sukhdeo
