West Berbice pedestrian fatally struck

A West Coast Berbice pedestrian died and a pedal cyclist has been hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after they were struck along the Number 42 Village, West Coast Berbice Public Road yesterday morning.

Dead is Gregory Stanley, also known as `Backtoe’, 54, of Number 42 Village, Corentyne. Stanley, reportedly resided with an aunt.

The accident scene

According to information gathered, two vehicles were travelling west along the public road when one attempted to overtake the other. However, as a car was approaching from the opposite direction, the overtaking car was forced to pull back into its lane, hitting the car in front in the side. The car in front then lost control and swerved off the road, slammed into a parked car and hit the pedestrian and cyclist.

The accident is said to have occurred sometime around 6.15 am yesterday.

The pedestrian and the female cyclist were both rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead on arrival. However, the cyclist who is said to have sustained injuries to her ankle has since been transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was admitted in a stable condition.

The police have launched an investigation and as of yesterday afternoon both drivers were in custody.
