Child burnt in Mon Repos fire

A 7-year-old girl was severely burnt about her body early yesterday morning after a fire of unknown origin gutted her Mon Repos North, East Coast Demerara home.

The injured child, Shanya Persaud sustained second and third degree burns and is presently admitted at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Her condition is listed as critical.

Stabroek News was told that the fire started at around 1 am at the single-flat situated at Lot 101 Mon Repos North, ECD.

The house is occupied by Persaud, her two siblings ages, 9 and 13 and their mother. At the time of the fire, the children were at home alone.

Reports are that the children’s mother left home to attend a wedding in the community on Sunday.

An investigation has since been launched by the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Fire Service.
