Taxi driver shot dead at Mocha

A father of two was last evening shot dead at Cemetery Road, Mocha while apparently attempting to fend off robbers.

Stabroek News understands that just after 9 pm a single gunshot was heard in the vicinity of the Village Burial ground after which residents found 42-year-old Owayne Lynch, a taxi driver from Georgetown, face down on the road bleeding from a wound to his abdomen.

It appears that Lynch who died clutching a sharp instrument was attempting to defend himself from a robbery attempt at the time of his death.  His mother Coreen Lynch told Stabroek News last night that her son, who drove Toyota Ist PRR 3313 had been operating a taxi for more than two years during which he hadn’t had any problems.  ‘I know he lil hasty and sometimes does have problem with me and he sister but I never know he had problem with passengers,” a distraught Lynch told Stabroek News. Up to press time Police were still on the scene collecting evidence.

A police statement issued today follows:

Police are investigating the murder of Owayne Lynch, age 34 yrs., a taxi driver of 3521 Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown which occurred about 21:45 hrs on 2019-08-06, on Cemetery Road, Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara by person/persons unknown.

Enquiries disclosed that the victim was plying his trade with motor car #  PRR 3313 ,a black Toyota IST from Swift Cab at Lot 6 Dennis Street, Turkeyen, Sophia. On 2019-08-06 at 20:31 hrs, the dispatcher of the Taxi Service dispatched the victim to Sophia to pick up a client destined to Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara.

However, about 21:45 hrs, the victim was seen lying motionless on Cemetery Road Mocha Arcadia in a pool of blood with multiple wounds about his body; an ice pick was found at the scene.

The body is presently at Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

No arrests; a further update will be given later.
