President invites GECOM to meeting

President David Granger has invited recently appointed  GECOM Chairman Claudette Singh and all six of the GECOM Commissioners to a meeting today to discuss the elections body’s state of preparedness for general elections, sources last evening confirmed.

“By request from the President, the chairman and commissioners from both sides…were invited to a meeting tomorrow. As far as we know, the entire body will be present,” a source close to the process told Stabroek News last evening.

Singh’s Commission is still to rule on whether house-to-house registration (HtH) will continue. The controversial HtH will be a key determinant in the timetable for elections.

Singh has scheduled a  meeting of  GECOM on August 15, one day after the acting Chief Justice, Roxane George  is scheduled to issue a ruling on a challenge to the HtH exercise underway.

The opposition and some commentators have said that HtH is a fundamental breach of the constitution which requires general elections to be held within three months of September 18 or an extended period which would require the support of two thirds of the National Assembly.

Granger and his government have been slated for apparently trying to delay general elections which should have been held since March this year following the successful passage of the motion of no confidence.

Granger has also come under pressure to name a date for general elections.
