Miner accused of stealing $1.8M in raw gold

A miner was asked to post $200,000 bail for his release yesterday after being charged with stealing over $1.8 million worth of raw gold.

Oliver La Rose, 28, of Lot 546 Diamond-Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared in the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Friday, where he denied the theft charge.

It is alleged that on August 6th, at Mahdia, he stole eight ounces of raw gold, worth $1,872,000, which was the property of Joseph Maloo.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not offer many details pertaining to the charge, but he did mention to the court that four and a half ounces of gold were recovered in La Rose’s possession, along with $57,000 and clothes which the accused allegedly claimed to have bought from selling the stolen gold. Mansfield also informed the court that the $57,000 is the value of quarter of an ounce of gold.

With no objections to bail from the prosecutor, the Chief Magistrate McLennan granted the man his release on $200,000 bail, with the condition that he reports to the Mahdia Police Station every Friday at 8 am until his trial is concluded. She then transferred the matter to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court, where a hearing is scheduled for October 15th.
