Seventeen members of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) last week participated in port security training by Chile’s DIRECTEMAR.

A release last week from the Chilean Embassy said that the cooperation between the two agencies stemmed from a visit by President David Granger to Chile in 2016 and a meeting in November last year between Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan and Chile’s Ambassador to Guyana Patricio Becker.

The release said that the training was done by Pablo Ferrada of Chile’s Maritime Territory and National Merchant Marine (DIRECTEMAR). Topics covered included Port Facilities Security Assessments; Cyber Security in Port Security Management; Port Security and the Extended Maritime Domain; Port Security versus Economic Competiveness; and Planning Port Security Exercises.

Ambassador Becker was reported as saying that the technical cooperation opened the way for future joint programmes.
