Rickland Bovell, the cabbage farmer accused of fatally stabbing 18-year-old David Toney at the Timehri Docks in April, was yesterday committed to stand trial for murder.

Bovell learnt his fate when Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ruled on the sufficiency of the evidence made out against him at the conclusion of a Preliminary Inquiry into the charge.

The accused heard that having considered the evidence led by the defendant’s attorney and the reply of prosecutor Neville Jeffers, the court was of the opinion that there was sufficient evidence to put Bovell to stand trial for the crime.  Bovell was subsequently told that he was committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.

He will remain on remand until that time.

The charge against Bovell states that on April 19th, at the Timehri Docks, he murdered Toney.

Bovell is alleged to have committed the crime during an altercation at the docks over payment for loading produce onto a truck.
