A $1.8 million facility for triage has been commissioned at the Port Mourant Hospital earlier this week so as to improve the comfort of visitors to the institution.

The project was funded by donations from local and overseas-based businesspersons, with the Indo-Caribbean Federation being the largest donor.

During his vacation earlier this year, Doctor-in-Charge of the hospital Devendra Radhay personally sought donors for the project, as he thought the improvements were necessary for the hospital.

During his brief remarks at the commissioning ceremony, Dr Radhay told those gathered that the hospital has seen an increase in patients over the last few months. As a result, its management has been working to improve every aspect of the institution.

“We have had some challenges with the increase in persons coming to the hospital and so we use the one door for the triage, to see the doctor and to collect medication. The intention of this building is to isolate the persons that will have to go in the same area for triage so that the nurses at the same time can see what is going on outside. It will also create more comfort for patients that have to wait for long hours,” he explained.

Dr. Radhay has been stationed at the hospital for over eight months and has been working around the clock to better the institution. Patients present regularly for clinic purposes attested to this as well as to his approachable personality.

Ralph Tamesh, President of the Indo-Caribbean Federation, New York, explained, that after meeting Dr. Radhay at a social event and becoming aware of the project, he then had a meeting with some members who decided to contribute without hesitation. He said they secured a total of US$7,000, however, US $4,000 was used for the project. The remaining US$3,000 will be used for another project at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Dr. Radhay has also started a feeding programme at the hospital, with the main aim of providing healthy meals to patients. He said the programme, which cover two days every week, sees every patient in the compound receiving a healthy meal.
