Unauthorised construction on Mon Repos Railway Embankment posing problems

Dear Editor,

We, the residents along the Mon Repos Railway Embankment, humbly seek your kind assistance in publicizing our plight. A bread vendor has erected a building on the reserve which is used by residents in the area as an entrance. Mind you, we understand that he was offered an alternative site by the NDC but refused the offer. We have lodged several complaints to the Regional Chairman and the NDC Chairman about this unauthorized construction. Not only is this a traffic hazard but it prevents us from enjoying peaceful rest and security as youths gather here each day to smoke drugs and consume alcohol way into the evening along with an annoying lighting plant. We are afraid to venture out in the evenings since these youths prey on young girls and rob the residents, and urinate in full view of the public and members of our households. Additionally, this unauthorized construction is preventing us from constructing a concrete drain and revetment in the same area as the place is being flooded owing to them discarding their rubbish and other items.

However, after making representations to the relevant authorities and lodging complaints on several occasions, nothing is forthcoming, and it appears as if complaints are acts of futility. We are now stuck between a rock and hard place.

Yours faithfully,
