Helena collision results in temporary disruption of GTT services

Following damage to a utility pole and cables as a result of the collision of a bus and a container truck at Helena, Mahaica, several villages along the East Coast corridor were without service from the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) for a number of  hours yesterday.

This was confirmed by GTT’s Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager Jasmin Harris.

In a brief statement, the company reported an outage affecting customers from Cove and John to Number 34 Village, which was as a result of the vehicular accident, which caused damage to infrastructure at Helena, Mahaica.

As a result, the company said its mobile, landline and internet services were impaired in the areas. A technical team was deployed to have the services restored as soon as possible.

Around 7 pm, Harris confirmed that service was restored to the area after the company’s technical team was able to fix a cable that was cut due to the accident.

According to information reaching Stabroek News, the collision resulted in the bus toppling several times and the container truck careening off of the road and into a nearby drain, before hitting a utility pole and almost breaking it in half.

Harris noted that there were important cables on the pole that were cut, which resulted in the services being down for the areas.

No one was seriously injured in the accident.
