Gentle carts off fourth U18 title

National lawn tennis player Afruica Gentle secured her fourth successive title in the U18 category of the seventh Bakewell junior Open competition which concluded yesterday. 

Gentle retained her crown with a clinical 6/2, 6/0 win over Saskia Persaud at Le Ressouvenir tennis facility courts. 

Meanwhile, Vadeanand Resaul, who captured the boys U14 title Thursday, completed the double by downing Viraj Sharma 6/0, 5/0 in the boys under – 18 final. Sharma retired hurt in the final set after suffering an injury.

The other final of the day saw Hayden Mentore defeating Ricky Romascindo 5/3, 4/4, 7/3 to bag the boys U12 title. Romascindo had earlier in the day rebounded from dropping the first set to defeat Gerald Scotland 2/4, 4/1, 10/8 to book his spot in the final. 

Thursday’s results also saw Persaud duly copping the girls U-14 title by accounting for Reshida Hardy 2/4, 5/3, 10/7 in a hard-fought final while Paula Kalekyezi took the girls U-12 title by defeating Menikshi Jaikisson 4/0, 4/1.  

The three -week competition saw the conclusion of 50 competitive matches. The tournament was used as preparation for the upcoming Inter Guiana Games set to be contested in French Guiana from October 30 to November 2, 2019.
