With March 2nd set for the holding of general and regional elections, the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) have said that they are prepared to aid in ensuring free and fair elections.

“The United States, United Kingdom, and the European Union note the President’s announcement of a firm election date of 02 March, 2020.

It is now essential to ensure free and fair elections which we are pleased to support with elections assistance and monitoring along with other colleagues in the international community,” United States Ambassador to Guyana Sarah-Ann Lynch, United Kingdom High Commissioner to Guyana Greg Quinn and the Head of Delegation of the European Union to Guyana Ambassador Fernando Ponz Cantó said in a brief joint statement on the announcement of the election date.

President David Granger has announced that the polls, which are constitutionally overdue, will be held on March 2nd, 2020.

Prior to the announcement this week, Granger had come under mounting pressure from the international community to name a date and has had his government described as unconstitutional. The polls are due early as a result of the passage of a no-confidence motion against the government since December last year.
