Minister of State,  Dawn Hastings Williams yesterday presented 85 food hampers to residents of flood-affected Zeelugt and visited Anna Catherina and Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara to do some further assessment of the flood related damage.

A release from the Ministry of the Presidency said that the Minister was accompanied by representatives of the Civil Defence Commission and Region Three Regional Information Officer,  Ganesh Mahipaul.

Hastings-Williams said that during a meeting with residents of Zeelugt on Monday she learnt that several of them were without food items and she endeavoured to respond speedily to their needs.

“Today I am back here as we promised. We promised that we are going to help them because some of them, their food items are soaked and it’s not palatable for them,” she said.

The Minister, according to the release,  also handed over two bags of chicken feed to a family in Anna Catherina who lost 300 chickens during the flood. She then met with residents of Den Amstel to get a first-hand look at the damage there.

Residents of Zeelugt said that they were thankful for the timely intervention. “We are thankful that we got this little assistance because the disaster really shook us up. It was about four days we were under water,” said Pragld Ramkissoon a resident of Zeelugt North.
