Perth collision leaves students, others injured

An accident which occurred yesterday along the Perth Public Road, Essequibo Coast,  resulted in a number of school students being injured.

According to information received, the accident occurred just around 2:30 pm and involved a motor lorry and a minibus which was transporting 13 passengers which included students and one teacher.

Information reaching Stabroek News stated  that the motor lorry, bearing registration number GNN 3320 which was being driven by one Hitendra Narine was proceeding north along the Perth Public Road loaded with construction materials while the minibus bearing registration number BYY 1179 was proceeding in the same direction at a fast rate.

According to the police, the driver of the motor lorry put on his right indicator in an attempt to turn into the Perth Koker Dam. While taking the turn, the driver of the minibus, Jerome Banson attempted to overtake the lorry and struck a piece of wood which caused him to lose control of the vehicle and collide with a utility post. The bus subsequently turned turtle and stopped some distance away from the point of impact.

All of the passengers in the bus sustained injuries and were transported to the Charity Hospital by vehicles which were passing at the time. Banson was picked up in an unconscious state. While some of the passengers were treated for minor injuries, the driver was treated for injuries to his head and about his body and two other passengers were treated for fractures to their legs.

A breathalyzer test which was conducted on Banson showed up negative. The police are currently carrying out investigations.
