The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Chairperson of Region Four Genevieve Allen yesterday encouraged students from a number of secondary schools from the East Coast of Demerara to build self-confidence and self-esteem in themselves during a programme which was held in observance of International Day of the Girl Child.

The RDC, in collaboration with Massy Distribution, the Beterverwagting Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Benjamin’s Bakery, and the Department of Youth, observed International Day of the Girl Child at the La Bonne Intention Secondary School, under the theme “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow.”

Allen addressed students of the La Bonne Intention, Beterverwagting, Plaisance, and Buxton secondary schools and she told them that they should not limit themselves when choosing a career path. In addition, she urged them to take advantage of educational opportunities. “Become empowered so that together we will become a force to be reckoned with and we will stand out as a woman or girl child in this country,” she added.

Allen further stressed on the fact that Guyanese girls are privileged in comparison with girl in other countries, some of whom are unable to have access to education. “We are privileged that as women and girls we’re given the opportunity of equality with our men and boys. In Guyana, we are given the opportunity for access to education, health, pure water, rights and responsibilities. There are women around the world who do not share the similar rights that we do here in Guyana,” Allen stressed.

After her brief remarks, representatives from the Child care and Protection Agency and Massy Distributions expressed the same sentiments and further encouraged the girls to focus and respect themselves. They also encouraged the girls to take their education seriously. Before the conclusion of the programme, the representatives of Massy Distributions gifted each child with Kotex-related products while Allen presented students of the various secondary schools with plants.
