Smuggling of foreigners via Lethem continuing

Dear Editor,

Despite denials by the government, it is known and very visible daily that large amounts of foreigners are passing through the town of Lethem intransit to Brazil. While some are legally present, others are shuttled through illegally day and night.

How is it that the immigration police and other law enforcement officers turn a blind eye on this total disrespect and continued violations of our laws?

The Federals on the other side of Bom Fin,  Brazil, are much aware that many of these travellers are not adequately processed by Guyanese immigration before entry into Brazil.

The bus services will continue to act in collusion with corrupt officials en-route from Linden to Lethem.

There is a new trend that is occurring in Lethem at present. Whenever the buses arrive here from Georgetown, these bus services call special Brazilian and Guyanese private vehicles to transport suitcases belonging to these foreigners. They are then smuggled around, over and under the lovely Takutu Bridge into Brazil.

Yours faithfully,
