No charges yet after discovery of sub-machine gun in city storeroom

Seven persons, including the son of a city businessman who had been taken into custody almost three weeks ago following the discovery of a sub-machine gun and a quantity of ammunition at Church Street, South Cummingsburg, George-town, have been released from police custody without charge.

Contacted for an update yesterday, Crime Chief (ag) Michael Kingston informed Sunday Stabroek that the police received legal advice to release the men due to their multiple occupancy at the premises at the time of the discovery.

The police, in a press release, had said that the discovery was made around 2.30 pm on September 24th during an intelligence-led operation.

Among the items discovered were the sub-machine gun, with its serial number filed off, three magazines, a silencer, 120 live rounds of .45 ammunition and an AK-47 magazine.

The items, the police had said, were found in a storeroom.

One of the suspects, according to the police, is a licensed firearm holder
