(Trinidad Guardian) A man from St James was on Sunday shot and killed within metres of the location where his father met a similar fate at the hands of the police, a little over two years ago.
According to reports, around midday, Shaquille “Taki” Holder was walking to a shop near his home at Belle Vue Road, Long Circular, St James when he was attacked by a gunman.
Holder attempted to run away but was pursued by the gunman, who shot him several times before running away.
Holder was taken to the St James Medical Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
On February 13, 2016, Holder’s father Sheldon “Mek Mek” Bernard, 42, was walking along the same street when police attempted to stop and search him.
Bernard reportedly ran away and allegedly attempted to pull an object from his waist when he was shot once by police.
Bernard’s death sparked protest action in the community as residents claimed that Bernard was unarmed when he was shot.
Holder was the third man to be killed in north Trinidad between Friday night and yesterday afternoon and raised the murder toll for the year to 430.
Around 2.30 am on Saturday, Romero “Ants” Serrette, an alleged drug addict from Las Alturas, Morvant, entered a property at Prizgar Road in San Juan to steal avocados.
Serrette was confronted by the homeowner and a relative and was chopped several times with an axe. His body was found on the roadway. The homeowner and his relative surrendered to police shortly after the incident.
Over 12 hours later, homicide detectives were summoned to Fiver Rivers, Arouca, for another murder.
Canius “Nai Nai” Wilson, 28, was near to his home when he was attacked by a man who shot him several times.
Crime scene investigators found 15 spent shells from a high-powered assault rifle near his body.
Autopsies will be performed on all three victims at the Forensic Science Centre in St James, on Monday.
