The Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Monday towed and impounded several motor cars found parked diagonally, and double parked, making good on a warning issued last week to punish persons who defy traffic laws.

The owner of a motor car which was double parked on Robb Street, in front of Guyana Publications Inc., opposite Republic Bank’s Camp Street Branch, pleaded with traffic officers in vain, and then watched helplessly as his vehicle was towed away.

The driver stood, hands on his waist, as traffic officers, armed with a tow truck, towed his vehicle East along Robb Street, before turning North on Camp Street, and then out of sight.

Several vehicles which were double parked on either side of this stretch of Robb Street were immediately removed following the towing, which others (including the vehicle double parked on the left, activated their hazard lights after stopping)

Last week GPF Public Relations Officer, Jairam Ramlakhan, dispatched a notice to the press reminding motorists of the prohibition against parking diagonally, and parallel parking, as such parking compromises safety.

“Persons found in breach of the laws will be dealt with accordingly,” the statement said.

Parallel parking, though illegal, had been allowed as a matter of policy for several years owing to the fact that it required less space, and availed more motorists parking. However, the law against such parking started to be enforced in 2015 after an increase in traffic accidents related to such parking.
