Trial underway of accused in Lethem post office heist murder

The trial of two men accused of murdering a security guard during a 2013 multi-million dollar heist in Lethem continued yesterday at the High Court in Georgetown.

The charge against Alvin Kissoon and Calvin King alleges that on January 18th 2013, they murdered John Christopher Friday during a robbery at the Lethem Post Office.

When the trial continued yesterday before Justice Sandil Kissoon, Detective Police Sergeant Winter testified about visiting the crime scene.

The officer told the court that in January of 2013, he was the subordinate officer-in-charge of crime for police in the Lethem Division. He noted that on January 19th, 2013, relative to reports of an alleged robbery at the Lethem Post Office, he visited the crime scene.

According to the police witness, he assisted in the investigation and went into the post office, where he saw that it had been ransacked and that an opened safe was empty.

Winter further related to the court that upon further investigation, Friday’s body was found facing upwards. He also noted that he observed iron grills, which were secured by padlocks, had been pried from the door’s frame.

The trial is expected to continue today.

The two accused were initially charged along with a woman, Theresa Lovell. The three accused allegedly tied up two guards who were on duty and beat them on the day in question. Christopher died subsequently. It was also alleged that they broke into five safes in the post offices and carted off $9.8 million.

After an investigation was launched the accused were all intercepted at the Mabura checkpoint, some 12 hours after the robbery, with cash, a quantity of phone cards and pay slips.
