A 21-year-old miner was killed yesterday afternoon after the mining pit he was working in caved in at Baramita, North West District (NWD), Region One.
The dead man has been identified as Deon Henry, who was a resident of Baramita.
The cave-in occurred sometime between 11 am and 1 pm yesterday at Triangle Backdam, Baramita.
Sources told Sunday Stabroek that Henry and a group of others were working in the mining pit, which measures approximately 20 feet in depth and 80 feet in width when a section of the eastern wall caved in, trapping him.
Henry’s motionless body was subsequently retrieved.
He was transported to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A police investigation is ongoing.
