The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) says it has been consulted on the restructuring and reorganizing of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).

A statement on Sunday from the GGDMA said that its executives on November 7, 2019 met with officials from the Jamaican consultancy firm A-Z Consultants Inc. and were happy to give its recommendations to the process.

“The Association is of the opinion that the process was long overdue and should have started at least a year ago when it was approved by the Government of Guyana. Nevertheless, the Association welcomes the commencement of this much needed process and hopes that the outcomes are positive as it relates to the restructuring and reorganizing of the GGMC”, the GGDMA said.

The statement added that over the years miners have been greatly affected by the many inefficiencies at the GGMC which has caused a lot of grievances as miners conduct business daily at the Commission.

“The GGDMA hopes that the recommendations of the Consultants will be fully taken on board and reviewed fully and not be cherry-picked as was done in some cases in the past. The Association would like to see the recommendations make way for a better serving and functioning Commission, where miners can be better facilitated to conduct business in an efficient and effective business environment. The time for change at the GGMC is NOW!”, the GGDMA stated
