The law should deal with all speeding and drunken motorists condignly

Dear Editor,

We are about to end this year, 2019 with five tragic leaps already into the grave. This involved five persons being killed in this reckless motor accident that took place at Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara. Consequently, and undoubtedly, I strongly suggest that some action be taken seriously by legislation to help reduce the accident rate on our motor ways, especially.

Moreover, I wish the law should deal with all speeding and drunken motorists condignly. These reckless or aggressive drivers should be made to feel a part of the full weight of the law relevant to the nature of the offence committed. This, to my mind, will help immensely to diminish the current accident rate which seems to me to have become chronic.

Road safety education all along is our motto, even in our schools. Many road-users obviously treat the traffic regulations with contempt, despite the informative radio talks given every morning, and the corollary to this situation of reckless road-users, culminates into utter disrespect for the law in our society we are trying to build. Ultimately, in short, the two main ingredients of discipline, which people should practice at all times are care and courtesy. Thus, consideration, co-operation and safety would naturally follow. Additionally, people are of great importance in our emerging society and hence we all need to take maximum precaution for self- preservation on our roadways.

Yours faithfully,
Autry A. Fernandes
