Blockmaker Ashaka John, who was recently charged with strangling a man on Church Street, was stabbed in prison last Friday.

John, 24, of Lot 109 ‘A’ Field Sophia, is alleged to have strangled Jason Bowen in front of the Office of the Opposition Leader last month.

He was due to attend court on Monday for a hearing.

However, Police Con-stable 21649, Linden Cornelius yesterday told a court that John was  stabbed in the lower left abdomen during a fight at the Lusignan Prison last Friday. Cornelius explained that when he went to the prison to uplift prisoners, he was told that John was injured. He was also informed that the man is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Cornelius subsequently went to the hospital, where he found John being guarded by two police officers. The circumstances surrounding the stabbing were not clear.

It is alleged that on October 12th, 2019, at Church Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, John murdered Bowen. During John’s first appearance at the city court, his attorney, George Thomas, had told the court that his client was suffering from “mental problems” and had been seeing a doctor at the GPHC for a few years.

John had been remanded to prison and was expected to be evaluated by a doctor. However after he did not appear at the court on Monday, the magistrate adjourned the matter until November 28th.
