Cow thrown on foreshore near Kitty Pump Station and left to decompose

Dear Editor,

Who would commit such a dastardly and grotesque act? Kill and throw a big hefty, healthy looking cow on the Kitty foreshore at the junction of the roundabout.

While walking on the Kitty seawall on Monday, November 18th around 5.30 pm it was drawn to my attention by a friend walking alongside me.  We both were aghast at the deadly sight and fate of this healthy looking cow lying amidst the massive boulders over the wall.  My first thought was, this might be an animal sacrifice or an act of vindictiveness.  Someone suggested it must have come in with the tide.  Immediately my response was no! There was no sign of bloating to suggest that the body was under water; it was a dry fresh, healthy looking animal.  A stench was coming from the dead animal.

On Thursday November 21, 2019, I purposely walked the same route on the seawall only to my surprise to see the cow positioned on the same spot, the body beginning to decompose.  I was surprised the stench was not worse since there were now visible signs of decomposition.  We all know, as it further deteriorates, the stench will become unbearable.

I walked to the Kitty Pump Station at the junction of the roundabout, and specifically asked the gentleman, Shem, to whom I spoke, whether he was aware there was a dead cow over the wall in close proximity to the Pump Station and did anyone report the incident to the relevant authorities? He told me he knows of the dead cow and that he reported the incident over one week ago to two “big ones” Mr. Linman telephone 675-2049 and Mr. Bascom, telephone 624-0142 and to date no action on their part.

My appeal is to both Mr. Linman and Mr. Bascom to take swift action to remove the dead animal before it becomes immovable.  Should they fail to take action and allow the body to decompose where it is, would be a reflection of us as Guyanese. I asked Shem, to whom do they report, and was told that the Pump Station comes under the purview of the City Council. I was surprised this incident was right at home under the responsible authority and it was their first call to take action yet action is still pending.  Shame on you Councillors of the City of Georgetown.

I do hope by the time this letter reaches the press the dead animal would have already been removed.

As it relates to the persons who committed this act, I would wish that they be charged for this crime and penalized for firstly, killing the animal and secondly, disposing of the animal in the wrong place, with utter disrespect for their fellow citizens and visitors, at a place of recreation and relaxation.  It is also my fervent wish that persons who are aware of this dastardly act would come forward and expose this wicked and heinous crime by reporting what transpired to the relevant authorities.

I could only conclude this act was condoned by people of unscrupulous or unsound mind.

Editor thank you for publishing my letter exposing the acts of wickedness and cruelty in our society.

Yours faithfully,

Maria Rodrigues
