Two authors will next Friday afternoon launch their books at Moray House. The books are Woman, Value and Purpose by Ediclia Bastardo and The Poor Man’s Wisdom by Vanrick Beresford.

Both writers are diligent Christians who hope that the reading of their books will inspire others to find their purposes in life and have a closer relationship with God.

Ediclia co-authored Women Across Borders with Sonia Noel and translated it into Spanish, along with Sonia’s other books, but Woman, Value and Purpose is the first book she has written on her own. It was Sonia, she said, who encouraged her to write. She launched the Spanish version of Woman, Value and Purpose which translates to Mujer, Valor y Proposito in September of last year in Venezuela.

Ediclia Bastardo

Ediclia is the former director of the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation in Guyana and travelled here to promote her book and share her story. “… I chose to write about women because while I was working here, I was inspired by the women of Guyana,” she said. “We used to offer different craft courses from 2008-2013 and through this promoted the empowerment of women. During this time, I met many wonderful, talented and hardworking women and they inspired me to write about women, about the value and purpose of each one of us. I emphasized also that we need to get a little closer to God to be able to know what we are here for, because He is our creator, He is our architect and He knows the reason why he created each one of us… So, if we get closer to the creator, we will know what we are here for and that helps us to know a little more about our purpose in this life, the purpose as a wife, as a mother, as a citizen, as a sister, in general as a woman.”

Woman Value and Purpose has 12 chapters and talks about a spiritual relationship with God, hope, equality, self-love and its achievements, true meaning of the submission of women, learning to forgive, time of restoration and learning to conquer.

Ediclia said it took two years to write and compile everything. “I hope that whoever opens this book to read it is blessed and even one single sentence could make an impact on your life. Since the launching of the Spanish version many persons have contacted me and thanked me for writing this book, some even cried. This response is more than what I expected from women and actually a couple told me they are reading the book together,” she said.

Ediclia is married to a Guyanese translator and they are parents to three daughters. The eldest, a 20-year-old is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering and can speak four languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese and French). Her 16-year-old is a top performer in her class, can speak both Spanish and English and is currently learning to speak Greek and Korean, and her youngest at 15, can also speak both Spanish and English is learning Korean as well.

Ediclia is currently working on another book that is a compilation of different stories and experiences shared by both men and women.
