Accident claims life of Public Service College student

A fatal accident on the Meadow Bank Public Road in the vicinity of the Ruimveldt Industrial site, last night claimed the life of an 18-year-old student of the Bertram Collins College of Public Service and left a second person injured.

The dead teen has been identified as Deshon Morris of Lot 4, East La Penitence, Georgetown, while the injured person was identified as Keon Granville 27, of Phase Two, Lot 1, East Ruimveldt. At the time of the accident, which occurred at around 8pm, Morris was the rider of a motor cycle – licence plate number CJ 6021, while Granville was the pillion rider.

Stabroek News was told that Morris died at the scene of the accident, after colliding with a tractor – registration number GTT 2073 and trailer – TEE 6391, owned by Muneshwer’s Limited. The tractor and trailer were transporting pipes to the Guyana Shore Base Incorporated at Houston.

Police investigations revealed that the motorcycle was proceeding north on the eastern drive lane of the western carriageway of Houston Public Road while the articulated vehicle was proceeding east on the northern drive lane of Meadow Bank Public Road. As the driver of the articulated vehicle approached the intersection of Meadow Bank and Houston Public Road, he failed to stop and continued east onto the Houston Public Road. In doing so, police said, he ended up into the path of the motorcycle which came into contact with the right front portion of the tractor. As a result of the collision both the rider of the motor cycle and the pillion rider fell onto the road.

The rider was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Meanwhile, the pillion rider was treated for lacerations about the body and sent away.

The driver of the tractor and trailer has been taken into police custody and is currently assisting with investigations.
