Steve Bacchus, the man who was wanted in connection with the illegal weapons and cannabis found at the North Sophia home of his uncle and his wife, was yesterday released on bail after he was charged with having possession of six grammes of cannabis.

Bacchus, 27, denied the charge, which was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Three.

The charge stated that between November 24th and November 25th, at North Sophia, Bacchus had six grammes of cannabis in his possession.

Bacchus was represented by attorney Dexter Todd, who told the court that his client is the nephew of Gregory Bacchus, who was recently charged alongside his wife, Stacy Cort, for having over 75 pounds of cannabis in their possession at their North Sophia home. Gregory Bacchus was also charged with having illegal weapons. During the couple’s time in police custody, the couple allegedly implicated Steve Bacchus and a wanted bulletin was issued for him. He added that his client immediately turned himself in to the police and was subsequently searched but nothing was found on him. Steve Bacchus was later questioned about the weapons and cannabis but denied that he had any knowledge of the illegal items. Todd further added that his client was not at home when the illegal items were found.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail being granted while saying that Steve Bacchus will soon be charged with illegal possession of two weapons with matching ammunition and a quantity of cannabis. She said the current charge was instituted so that police can have more time to investigate Steve Bacchus in relation to the other matters.

However, Todd contended that the basis of the current charge is unconstitutional and unlawful. He said that he was present when the police searched his client and is certain that they did not find any narcotic on him.

The magistrate granted Steve Bacchus bail in the sum of $5,000 and told him to return to court on December 9th, 2019.

Last Friday Gregory Bacchus denied charges which alleged that on November 25th, 2019, at the Guyana Power and Light Reserve, North Sophia, he had in his possession an AK-47 and a pistol as well as 66 rounds of ammunition when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

He was also charged alongside his wife with having 34.750 kilogrammes (76.5 pounds) of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking on the same date and at the same location. They denied the charge before telling the court that the illegal items belonged to Steve Bacchus.
