Cops probing reported Waini River pirate attack

The police in Region One (Barima-Waini) have launched an investigation into an alleged pirate attack in the Waini River on Friday morning during which a group of fishermen were robbed.

Sunday Stabroek was reliably informed that the attack occurred around 8.45 am during which five members of a fishing vessel were relieved of their boat engine, cellphones and other valuables.

The crime was allegedly committed by four men, including foreign nationals, who were all armed.

A police source yesterday informed this newspaper that a team of ranks has since been dispatched to the scene as the investigation continues.

The source said that around 10.13 am on Friday, the captain of the “Midnight River” was proceeding to Georgetown from Port Kaituma when he noticed a fishing vessel drifting in the Waini River.

The man reportedly told the police that he enquired from the crew members what happened and he learnt that they were robbed. He immediately tried contacting the Tamakay floating base by radio but was unsuccessful.

The police were then contacted.
