Silver for Shomari!

Shomari Wiltshire grabbed the silver medal in the Under 17 category of the Canadian Junior Squash Open championship after losing the final to Gabriel Yun on Tuesday at the White Oaks Conference Centre, Niagara, Canada.

Wiltshire lost 4 – 11, 11 – 4, 11 – 9 and 11 – 8 to emerge the runner-up and secure the silver medal. In the earlier matches, Wiltshire bested Canadian Amin Khan in the semi-final 13 –11, 9 – 11, 12 – 10 and 11 – 8. In the quarter final, Wiltshire defeated Canadian Griffin Manley 12 – 10, 11 – 8, 11 – 7.

In the round of 16 section, he defeated New Zealander Jack Conder 4 – 11, 11 – 5, 11 – 7, 12 – 10. Similarly, Wiltshire defeated Canadian Max Shevchenko in the first round 11 – 4, 11 – 2, 11 – 5 and bested Caymanian Jace Jervis 11 – 9, 12 – 10, 11 – 5 in the second round.

Meanwhile, the other members of the four-man travelling contingent suffered mixed results at the tournament. In the U13 Category, Mohryan Baksh ended in ninth place. Seeded 5/8, the highest of the Guyanese players in any of the draws, in his opening match, Baksh defeated Canadian Beckett Yuzpe 11 – 3, 11 – 2, 11 – 6 in the round of 32 section. In the round of 16 pool, Baksh lost to Canadian Kamran Gwadry 12– 10, 11 – 8, 11 – 9.

Entering the consolation draw, Baksh defeated Canadian Caleb Hickox 11 – 9, 11 – 5, 11 – 3 in the quarterfinal. In the semi-final, Baksh defeated Canadian Kent Rawlins 12 – 10, 11 – 5, 5 – 11, 12 – 10. In the finals of the consolation round, Baksh defeated Canadian Dylan Scott 11 – 6, 11 – 9, 6 – 11 and 12 – 10.

In the U15 category, the unseeded Nicholas Verwey defeated Canadian Danny Leigh 11 – 2, 11 – 2, 11 – 4 in the opening round. In his round of 32 match, Verwey lost to Mexican Santiago Medina 15 – 13, 9– 11, 11– 6 and 11 – 9. Entering the consolation draw, Verwey defeated Barbadian Dominic Wilson 11 – 2, 11 – 4, 11 – 4. In his second round match of the section, he defeated Canadian Vishaal Mehta 11 – 4, 6 – 11, 11 – 8 and 11 – 9.

In the consolation quarterfinal, Verwey defeated Canadian Jack Jones 11 – 8, 14 – 12, 11 – 8. However, he lost the consolation semi-final to Canadian Jacob Morrison 11 – 9, 11 – 9, 11 – 8.

Meanwhile, Joshua Verwey, who featured in the U13 section, defeated Bermudian William Frith 11- 3, 11 – 0, 11 – 3 in his opening match. However, he would lose his round of 32 fixture against Canadian Kamran Gwadry 11 –1, 11 – 1, 11 – 3.

In his first match in the consolation draw, the younger Verwey lost to Canadian Leo Roberge 11 – 6, 11 – 4, 11 –2. The four-member squad will now move on to the 2019 US Junior Squash Open in Massachusetts.
