Driver accused of assaulting policeman granted bail

A driver was granted bail after a City court heard that he assaulted a policeman.

Kenny Jones, 61, of Lot 651 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was yesterday charged with unlawfully assaulting a lance corporal of the Guyana Police Force. The father of six was in the courtroom of Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty when he was read the charge which states that on December 13, at Regent Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Lance Corporal 23978, a police officer acting in the execution of his duty.

Jones denied the allegation and his attorney, Adrian Thompson, told the court that his client did not assault the officer. He explained that the officer had told his client that he was parked in a ‘no parking zone’ by the Bounty Supermarket on Regent Street and asked for his driver’s licence. His client and the officer then had an exchange of words and he was given a ticket. He further stated that his client has suffered the loss of a lot of money by being at the court on yesterday’s date, since he is a driver and gets paid for driving.

The man was granted $10,000 bail and the matter was transferred to Court 11, where he was told to return to court on a later date in January, 2020.
