A youth was released on bail on Wednesday after he told a city court that he was attacked by the person he was accused of wounding.

Denzel Benjamin, 20, of 62 Norton Street, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared in the courtroom of Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty.

The charge states that on November 17th at Cornhill Street, Brickdam, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Delon Glasgow.

Immediately after pleading not guilty to the charge, Benjamin told the magistrate that he had just gotten out of a taxi when Glasgow attacked him with a piece of wood. He said that he usually keeps a knife in his bag, so he defended himself with the knife. He said that they got into a fight and Glasgow sustained his wounds as a result.

Bail was set at $75,000 after Benjamin explained his self-defence to the court. The matter was adjourned until January 15th, 2020.
