Youth awaits sentencing for theft of jewellery, UK currency

A construction worker is now awaiting sentencing for stealing over $200,000 in gold jewellery and UK currency.

At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Stephon Apple, 20, yesterday admitted to stealing a quantity of gold jewellery and money.

The charge against him stated that on December 14th, at Norton Street, Wortmanville, he stole three gold finger rings, a gold Spanish link band and £200, worth $204,000 combined. The stolen articles were the property of Chetwyn Eastman.

Police prosecutor Quinn Harris told Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus that Apple and Eastman are known to each other as they share a yard at the same property. He said that on the day in question, Eastman had placed the items in a bag and left it on his dining chair and then left. Upon returning home, he checked the chair and found that the bag was missing. He then checked his CCTV footage and saw Apple stealing the bag. He then reported the theft and Apple was arrested.

Eastman informed the court that the only reason Apple was in the yard was because a tenant took him in and that he otherwise had no fixed home. He then said that he had his daughter’s passport in the bag and that while that was not mentioned in the charge and even though none of the other articles were recovered, the passport was found next to the back gate.

Apple then told the court that he took the items in hopes of using them to pay for a course he wanted to do.

The magistrate requested that a police report on whether the man had been charged before is presented to the court as well as a probation report and she adjourned the matter until January 13th, 2020.
