Police clamping down on bikers

Following reports of a group of bikers riding motorcade-fashion on public roads without safety gear and in a manner dangerous to the public, Traffic Chief Linden Isles says the police are clamping down on the bikers.

Isles told Stabroek News that the matter was brought to the attention of the traffic department and they are working to address the issue. He clarified that the act is illegal and no permission was granted to the riders to participate in a motorcade.

As recent as Boxing Day, reports are that the group of bikers were seen on the East Coast Demerara Railway Embankment road, Camp Street and on the East Bank Demerara highway. While the number of bikers remain unknown, several were observed to be riding without helmets. They were all riding at a fast rate.

Meanwhile, Isles said that in an operation on Sunday night, 47 bikers from the Georgetown area were arrested for committing various traffic offences.

He said that they have begun to enforce the law on those who are found guilty.
