No bail for pork knocker on gun, ammo charge

A pork-knocker was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with the illegal possession of a gun and matching ammunition.

Kevin Richardson, 30, was brought before city magistrate Leron Daly, who read the charges to him.

It is alleged that Richardson, a father of five, on January 11th, at Arau Mountain Top, Cuyuni River, had a 9 mm firearm in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder. It is further alleged that on the same date and at the same time, he had a 9 mm round without being a licensed firearm holder.

According to the brief details presented to the court by police prosecutor Sanj Singh, on the day in question, the defendant was passing through Arau Mountain when he was stopped by four villagers. A search was then carried out on his person and the gun and ammunition were found. He was later arrested and taken to the police.

Attorney Damian DaSilva, who represented Richardson, told the court a different story. According to the attorney, his client was stopped by the villagers while passing through the landing and a weapon was pointed at him by one of the villagers. DaSilva said he was then beaten and taken to the police station, where it was claimed that the gun belonged to him.

Reasonable bail was later requested on behalf of the accused.

Having heard from the prosecutor and the attorney, the magistrate remanded Richardson to prison until January 21st, when a hearing will be held by the acting Chief Magistrate.
