Biker flees after fatal Nismes accident

The police are currently on the hunt for a motorcyclist who fled on Monday night after he allegedly struck a 70-year-old man along the Nismes, West Bank Demerara (WBD) Public Road, resulting in his death.

Dead is Herbert Caesar, a father of three of Lot 95-96 Nismes Public Road.

The accident occurred around 6.45 pm, after which Herbert was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Guyana Police Force spokesman Jairam Ramlakhan yesterday confirmed that the police are making stringent efforts to locate the rider, who abandoned his motorcycle and fled the scene following the accident.

In a press release, the police said enquiries revealed that the motorcyclist was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of the public road, at a fast rate of speed when he allegedly struck down Caesar.

Shaundel Caesar, the dead man’s wife, yesterday told Stabroek News that at the time of his death, Caesar was on his way to a nearby shop. “He was going to buy Vicks for he son,” she said.

She explained that she was at home when a neighbour came and enquired about Caesar. Upon answering, she said she learnt Caesar had been struck down and was lying on the roadway.

“A neighbour run in and ask me ‘Where is your husband?’ So I say he just gone to buy a Vicks and he said your husband just got hit down,” Shaundel recalled.

She said she immediately rushed out on to the road and secured a taxi to transport Herbert to the hospital. However, he died on the way there.

Herbert Caesar would have celebrated his 71st birthday yesterday. His body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy, which is scheduled for today.
