Ministry holds second mining lottery

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) yesterday held its second lottery for 2019 in Mining District 5, Port Kaituma, Region One following a similar exercise held in March in Georgetown.

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MoNR) release stated that the drawing was overseen by its Minister Raphael Trotman, who was accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Valerie Garrido-Lowe and Regional Member of Parliament, Richard Allen.

Trotman explained to the gathering that this was a fulfilment of a promise made to make more mining lands available to small miners in Region One, (Matarkai) sub-district and elsewhere. He however express-ed regret that more lands were not readily available and undertook to keep the search open for more mining opportunities.

He called on the successful applicants to use the lands beneficially and with respect for the environment and mining laws. The Minister also thanked the staff of GGMC for making the lottery possible.

At the completion of the lottery, 141 persons received one mining block each located in District 5 and other Mining Districts, the release added.
