Left-handed middle order batsman, Vishaul Singh believes consistent cricket will be key for Guyana Jaguars’ title defence in the Cricket West Indies Professional Cricket League.

Singh, 30, explained that the Jaguars as five-time defending champions, will be everyone’s target.

“In the entire Caribbean we have been champions and everyone wants to come at us, but we are mindful of everyone, we are on a level playing field and, as such, we just have to play consistent cricket and out-think the opposition.”

Last season proved to be one of the most challenging for the Jaguars but the left-handed batsmen said that the team will look to what has worked in the past to continue their dominance.

“We didn’t really bat as a unit [last season] but we had some individual brilliance at times and going forward we will be looking to what we did in the past and bat as a unit and put big totals with the top six getting us 300-400 runs.”

Last season only Anthony Bramble had an average of over 50.

The out-of-favour West Indies test batsman acknowledged that the recent practice match served as good preparation for the upcoming tournament.

“It was very good practice because we put ourselves behind and then we had to come from behind and by no means was this an easy outing as of such. They played well and had us with a deficit but the bowlers did the job in the second innings and the batters came and finished it off,” he said.

Singh reflecting on the match said, “I think coming into this game, the objective or aim was to spend some time in the middle and that was of importance more than anything else. The wicket wasn’t that conducive to a lot of stroke play in the first innings but it got better and you saw it was much better performance in the second innings.”
