Guyanese athletes eying Olympic Qualification at World Relays this weekend

The Guyanese contingent which is currently in The Bahamas for the World Relays, will be looking for Olympic qualification as a relay team in the Mixed 4x400M and Men’s 4x400M events respectively.

While the initial squad was composed of Daniel Williams, Aliyah Abrams, Arinze Chance, Kenisha Phillips, Malachi Austin and Tianna Springer, Simeon Adams, Patrick Abel and Nairissa McPherson have been added to the team following the absence of Phillips. While the Guyanese were only set to take to the track in Nassau in the mixed 4x400m relay, good fortune has smiled on the country as Guyana will now compete in the men’s 4x400m relay following the withdrawal of another country from that event.

Speaking in a video clip on social media yesterday, Chance, Guyana’s National Indoor 300m and 400m record-holder said “I am excited to be here, excited to be a part of Guyana’s first team at the world Athletics Relay Championships and I am looking forward to competing against some of the best teams in the world and to put Guyana in a position to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games which is our first goal and after that we will be working towards getting into the finals, getting into some medals and just taking it one step from here as we get closer to the Olympic Games”.

Daniel Williams who is a multiple record holder at the National Schools Athletics Championships echoed Chance’s sentiments and promised to put in his best effort on the track. Williams had made his mark on the international stage at the World U18 Championships under Gravesande where he clocked a personal best of 46.72 seconds in the 400m in Nairobi, Kenya. Meanwhile, Aliyah Abrams noted “I am really excited to compete and it will be my first time running a relay with Guyana and I know that we can do really well and I just have big hopes for the team so keep us in your prayers and cheer for us”.

The World Relays will sprint off this evening from 7:05 pm and will continue tomorrow.
