Chayanne Parboo, the three-year-old Pomeroon girl who was in dire need of blood, is currently in the United States (US), where she was seen by a specialist last Thursday at a top-rated hospital.

The child and her parents arrived in the US on February 3rd.

A little over two weeks ago, local doctors’ fears were confirmed when a biopsy done on the child revealed that she has leukemia. Following the diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Chayanne’s mother, Verney Charles, said that the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) did not have the necessary drugs to begin treatment and therefore they needed to seek medical attention abroad.

A full medical review done in the US proved that the child did indeed have leukemia. Her doctors are fairly confident that given the results of preliminary tests that she can make a full recovery.

Non-profit organisation Saving Hands Emergency Aid, Inc. (SHEA) has since January 13th been assisting the family and is hoping to raise US$20,000. Eighty percent of this stated amount was said to have already been raised.

Among the donors was the Giftland Group of Companies, which donated US$2,500 last week Monday.

However, the total amount for Chayanne’s treatment has not yet been ascertained as she needs to do additional tests that will determine the kind of treatment required and the duration of her treatment. Treatment, the organisation explained in a Facebook post, will span two and a half years.

Presently Chayanne and her parents are staying at accommodation provided by SHEA. The child’s mother noted that the family is trying to stay positive.

Funds for Chayanne will go towards covering expenses, including medical and medication fees, air and ground transportation, housing, meals, clothing, and basic living necessities.

The location of the family’s whereabouts in the US as well as the name of the hospital Chayanne will be receiving treatment remains undisclosed due to a confidential agreement between the organisation and the hospital.

Individuals or companies that wish to donate to Chayanne can do so by donating online via the SHEA website or by the local bank being Demerara Bank. Deposits can be made to Lori Narine via the account number 006002041325.

SHEA has provided access to medical resources to children in Guyana and the Caribbean. Since the existence of the organisation, it has assisted 15 patients, many of whom would not have survived without its intervention.
