Minibus tout with two names remanded over assault

A minibus tout accused of assault was finally brought before the court yesterday after initially giving police officers a false name.

Ryan Persaud, 25, of 136 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, stood before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Court 3 of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on two separate charges which allege that on January 4, he verbally abused and assaulted Ainsworth Mason. Persaud pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police Prosecutor Delon Sullivan objected to bail and said that Persaud had corrupted the summons. The court was told that when he was initially charged, Persaud told police ranks that his name was Leon David, and the matter was thereafter written in that name.

Persaud was expected to appear in court on March 18 but did not turn up. Upon investigation, he was found and his real name was revealed to the police.

The father of one was granted bail on the abusive language charge in the sum of $5,000, but bail was refused on the assault charge.

The matter was adjourned until April 22.
